Arrowhead United Way Advancing Clean Energy Goals in San Bernardino County Project
"This project advances clean energy goals in San Bernardino County by expanding safe, community centered opportunities for biking and walking, while intentionally engaging local veterans as participants, mentors, and advocates. Transportation remains one of the largest contributors to regional greenhouse gas emissions, and many neighborhoods—especially those with high veteran populations—lack safe, accessible routes or programs that encourage active transportation. This initiative responds by combining climate education, community events, and veteran leadership to promote healthier, low emission mobility choices.
The program will host a bike and walk community event at our upcoming 3rd Annual BRAVE luncheon and Resource Fair, safety and clean energy awareness activities that highlight how replacing short car trips with human powered transportation reduces pollution and improves air quality. Veterans will be invited to participate through partnerships with local veteran service organizations, VA community groups, and military family networks. Many veterans face health challenges, social isolation, or limited access to wellness activities; biking and walking provide low cost, low impact ways to support physical and mental well-being while contributing to climate action.
Funding will support outreach, event coordination, volunteer mobilization and a bike giveaway, with a portion dedicated to ensuring veteran participation through targeted outreach, transportation assistance, and veteran led activity groups. By empowering residents—including veterans, youth, and families to adopt active transportation habits, the project reduces emissions, strengthens community connections, and supports San Bernardino County’s clean energy and climate action priorities.
This initiative creates a visible model of community driven sustainability, demonstrating how everyday choices—supported by inclusive programming—can improve environmental health, public wellbeing, and veteran engagement across the county.
