University of Redlands Project
"A Day of Climate Action in Redlands is a citywide day of service, education, and celebration that transforms climate concern into meaningful local action. Held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in recognition of Earth Day, the event brings together residents, students, faculty, community organizations, and the City of Redlands to participate in hands-on climate solutions that prepare our community for a hotter and more uncertain future.
The initiative was launched by the Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA) program in partnership with the Sustainable University of Redlands Farm (SURF) and California Climate Action Corps Fellows. Multiple community organizations host projects across the city during the morning service period, followed by a community celebration in downtown Redlands at Smiley Park featuring live music, food vendors, family activities, and information tables highlighting local sustainability resources.
SURF will serve as one of the primary project hubs for the day, hosting interactive demonstrations and volunteer learning opportunities focused on urban greening, climate-resilient food systems, and waste reduction. Planned activities include:
-Raised Bed Garden Demonstration (CCAC Fellow-led): Volunteers will learn how to build and maintain raised garden beds that support climate-resilient food production and water-efficient gardening practices.
-Herbal and Medicinal Plant Walk (Faculty-led): A guided tour highlighting climate-adapted plants and the role of biodiversity in resilient landscapes.
-Tree Giveaway and Urban Tree Care Demonstration (CCAC Fellow-led): Community members will receive climate-appropriate trees along with guidance on planting, care, and the role urban trees play in cooling cities and improving air quality.
-Supporting Native Bees and Pollinators Talk (Faculty-led): Participants will learn how native pollinators contribute to ecosystem resilience and how to create pollinator-friendly spaces at home.
-Composting Demonstration (CCAC Fellow-led): Volunteers will learn how to reduce food waste through backyard composting and understand the role of compost in building healthy soils and storing carbon.
The anticipated climate outcomes include increased community knowledge of climate solutions, expanded participation in urban greening and composting practices, reduced organic waste entering landfills, and strengthened community engagement around local climate action. By connecting hands-on volunteer activities with education and celebration, the event builds momentum for sustained climate action within the Redlands community.
