San Francisco Baykeeper Water Quality Day
Roll up your sleeves with Baykeeper for California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 19 at SF Marina Yacht Harbor! Trillions of plastic pieces enter SF Bay each year, but you can help us stop it. This year features a fun new activity: live water quality sampling alongside our team! Come pick up trash, see our community science in action, and win prizes Volunteers will also participate in Baykeeper's harmful algae bloom (HAB) monitoring program by collecting water samples and measuring salinity, pH, and turbidity. Participants will learn how nutrient pollution from wastewater treatment plants and climate change contribute to harmful algae blooms, which have caused significant ecological harm in San Francisco Bay. Metrics collected will include the number of volunteers participating and water quality data recorded through salinity, pH, and turbidity testing. In addition, volunteers will complete advocacy actions addressing the root causes of these environmental threats. Participants will be invited to sign action alerts urging stronger action to reduce trash pollution in the Bay and improve wastewater pollution controls that contribute to harmful algae blooms. Metrics collected will include the number of advocacy actions completed.
