Tree San Diego Project
"Our Chula Vista Arbor Day Planting and Tree Distribution is a community-driven climate action project that will expand the urban tree canopy while engaging residents in hands-on environmental stewardship. During this event, volunteers will plant 35 climate-resilient trees in a public space and assist in distributing 100 free trees to local residents to plant at their homes throughout Chula Vista. By increasing tree canopy in neighborhoods that experience high heat and limited shade, this project helps address urban heat island effects, improves air quality, and strengthens local climate resilience.
Trees are one of the most effective nature-based climate solutions. They sequester carbon dioxide, reduce ambient temperatures through shade and evapotranspiration, filter air pollutants, and improve stormwater management by absorbing rainfall. The trees planted during this project will begin providing cooling and environmental benefits immediately, while the trees distributed to residents will expand these benefits across the community as they mature. Collectively, these 135 trees will contribute to long-term carbon storage, neighborhood cooling, and improved environmental health in Chula Vista.
Volunteers will play a central role in implementing the project. Key tasks will include preparing planting sites by digging holes, staging tools and materials, and amending soil where needed. Under the guidance of Tree San Diego staff and trained volunteers, participants will plant and stake the 35 trees, apply mulch, and water them to ensure proper establishment. Volunteers will also support the tree distribution portion of the event by helping residents select appropriate trees for their homes, providing basic planting and care guidance, and assisting with loading trees into vehicles.
In addition to hands-on work, volunteers and residents will receive education about the importance of urban forests and how trees support climate resilience in Southern California communities. Participants will learn about proper planting techniques, watering practices, and long-term tree care to ensure the distributed trees thrive and provide maximum climate benefits.
By combining tree planting, community distribution, and public education, this project empowers residents to take part in local climate solutions. The Arbor Day event will strengthen community connections while expanding the urban forest, creating lasting environmental benefits that help Chula Vista adapt to a warming climate and build a healthier, greener future."
