Río Hondo College Foundation Project
"Rio Hondo College will host a clothing upcycling and textile waste reduction event designed to reduce landfill waste while educating students and community members about sustainable fashion practices. This volunteer-led event aligns with the Climate Action Counts priority focus on Waste Reduction by extending the life of clothing and diverting textiles from landfills. The primary climate outcome of this project is to divert at least 100 pounds of clothing and shoes from landfills through collection, sorting, repair, and creative upcycling. By promoting reuse and upcycling, this project will help reduce waste and encourage more sustainable consumption behaviors among students. The event will engage approximately 50 student volunteers contributing a combined total of 150 service hours. Volunteer responsibilities will include: • Collecting donated clothing and shoes from students and community members • Sorting and organizing donated items for reuse, repair, or upcycling • Weighing and recording the amount of textiles collected to measure landfill diversion • Assisting with event check-in and participant registration • Supporting workshop participants during the hands-on upcycling activities • Helping with basic clothing repairs, redesign, and creative upcycling projects • Documenting volunteer participation and climate impact metrics • Assisting with event setup and cleanup During the event, participants will take part in a hands-on upcycling workshop where donated clothing will be repaired, redesigned, or transformed into new wearable pieces. This workshop will demonstrate practical ways individuals can extend the life of clothing items and reduce textile waste. Remaining usable items that are not upcycled will be redistributed within the student community to further promote reuse. In addition to reducing textile waste, the project will raise awareness about the environmental impacts of fast fashion and empower participants with practical skills to make more climate-conscious choices in their everyday lives.
