National Health Foundation Community Greening Event
"Comunidad de NHF will enhance and reinvigorate an existing community garden by adding native and pollinator-friendly plants, improving growing areas, and engaging community members in hands-on climate action activities. Community gardens help reduce the distance food travels from farm to table, decreasing transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions while increasing access to fresh, healthy produce. Expanding green space also improves air quality, supports carbon sequestration, mitigates urban heat island effects, and increases local biodiversity by creating habitat for pollinators and other beneficial species. Volunteers will help prepare planting areas, install native plants, maintain garden beds, apply mulch, remove invasive weeds, and support ongoing garden stewardship. They will also assist with community outreach and educational activities that promote sustainable environmental practices. In addition to garden improvements, Comunidad de NHF will document and measure the amount of gleaned food recovered from community food distributions and diverted from the waste stream. Food waste that ends up in landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. To further reduce waste, volunteers will help collect, sort, weigh, and document food recovery efforts. Comunidad de NHF will also host a countertop composting workshop and distribute compost bins provided through the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). These activities will educate residents about composting organic waste at home and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill disposal. To address textile waste, Comunidad de NHF will provide an upcycling and textile reuse workshop that teaches participants how to transform old T-shirts into reusable shopping bags. During the event, volunteers will assist with workshop facilitation and organize a community clothing swap. Participants will be encouraged to bring gently used clothing they no longer need and exchange items with others, extending the life of textiles and reducing the demand for new products. Any remaining clothing will be donated to National Health Foundation (NHF)'s recuperative care guests, ensuring usable items stay out of landfills while supporting community members in need. The anticipated climate outcomes of this project include increased biodiversity through native plantings and bee houses, reduced greenhouse gas emissions through local food production and food waste diversion, decreased landfill waste through composting and textile reuse, and reduced reliance on single-use plastic bags through upcycling. Equally important, these activities will increase community awareness, participation, and investment in sustainable practices. By combining gardening, composting, food recovery, and textile reuse efforts, Comunidad de NHF will empower residents to take meaningful climate action while creating a healthier, more resilient community.
