The Earth Island Institute- Shark Stewards Project
"For Earth Day 2026, Shark Stewards will lead a multi-faceted climate action event at Berkeley Aquatic Park in collaboration with East Bay Regional Parks, Berkeley Waterside Works, Bay Area Sea Kayakers (BASK), and the Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP). This project addresses the ""Community Greening"" and ""Waste Reduction"" priority actions by restoring the lagoon ecosystem and monitoring the impacts of sea-level rise on this vulnerable urban shoreline. Anticipated Climate Outcomes Ecosystem Restoration: Removal of invasive species and planting of native vegetation will enhance local biodiversity and improve carbon sequestration within the park’s riparian zones. Pollution Mitigation: Comprehensive land and water-based debris removal will prevent plastic and chemical pollutants from entering the San Francisco Bay, protecting marine life. Climate Adaptation Data: Installation of water level monitors and ongoing water quality testing will provide critical data for Berkeley’s climate adaptation planning, specifically regarding rising tides and urban runoff. Inclusive Climate Stewardship: By partnering with BORP, we are ensuring that climate action is accessible to disabled youth, fostering a diverse generation of environmental stewards. Volunteer Tasks Shoreline & Lagoon Cleanup: Volunteers will perform a ""sweep"" of the park grounds and lagoon edges to collect and categorize waste. On-Water Cleanup (BASK): Experienced kayakers will navigate the lagoon to retrieve floating debris and plastics unreachable from the shore. Native Planting & Habitat Restoration: Under the guidance of East Bay Parks, volunteers will remove invasive plants and install native species to stabilize the shoreline and support local pollinators. Citizen Science & Monitoring: Volunteers will assist in testing water quality (pH, oxygen, and temperature) and help install permanent water level monitors to track tidal changes. Inclusive Support: Peer volunteers will work alongside BORP participants to ensure all restoration activities are adapted for mobility and accessibility."
