Groundwork Richmond Project
Groundwork Richmond is hosting an Earth Day event for up to 50 volunteers. This is event will host local community members to do maintenance on trees that Groundwork planted. As these trees grow they sequester more Green House Gases and do a better job of cleaning the air, a much needed action in Richmond, CA. Volunteers will also paint signs to place near trees to deter vandalism. Vandalism of Groundwork trees and City of Richmond trees has been a major challenge recently, and making signs that explain why these trees are important for the community may help deter some of this vandalism. This event will be held on the Richmond Greenway, a bicycle and pedestrian trail that was converted from an old railroad track. The Richmond Greenway was established in 2007 and Groundwork has adopted 4 spots along the trail, and this event will focus on maintenance of one those locations. This work will be done in an area of Richmond where "More asthma emergency room visits, higher rates of cardiovascular disease” and “lower life expectancy than in other areas of Contra Costa County,” occur, according to a 2020 report by the air quality district. This makes this event and the tree maintenance all the more vital in order to capture particulate matter and clean the air. In order to mitigate pollution it is essential to get trees in the ground, but just as important is the maintenance of these trees to ensure they survive and grow. The bigger and healthier these trees, the more they clean the air. The anticipated outcome of this project is increased Green House Gas sequestration and particulate matter capture now over the next 40 years, decreased vandalism of trees in Richmond, CA, and increased knowledge of community climate change and air quality solutions.
