Trashion Show Long Beach is a community-powered climate action project that transforms discarded materials into wearable art while building environmental awareness, creative confidence, and collective responsibility around waste. Through a public runway event, the project invites residents—of all ages—to engage directly with the environmental impacts of consumerism and reimagine waste as a resource. The anticipated climate outcomes center on waste reduction, behavior change, and increased climate literacy. By diverting textiles and single-use materials from the waste stream, the project reduces landfill contributions and highlights alternatives to disposal through reuse and repair. Participants gain practical skills in mending, upcycling, and sustainable design, fostering long-term shifts in how they consume, discard, and value materials. The public-facing fashion show amplifies these outcomes by modeling creative reuse at scale, inspiring broader community audiences to adopt more sustainable habits. Volunteers play a key role in both implementation and impact. They assist with event setup and breakdown, documentation (photo/video), check in, ushering guests and supporting the final runway production. Some volunteers may take on leadership roles such as stage manager or sound engineer. Throughout the day, volunteers engage in conversations about sustainability, climate justice, and local environmental challenges, strengthening community knowledge and advocacy.
