San Diego Bird Alliance Wildfire Resiliency Day
"Volunteers will work alongside San Diego Bird Alliance staff to increase Anstine Nature Preserve's wildfire resiliency through the removal of fire-prone invasive species and by clearing defensible space. The focus will be around the main structure on the preserve, a residence-turned-nature center. With the new guidelines for Zone 0 being set for defensible space, there is work to be done to remove existing plants from within 5 feet from the structure as well as burnable materials like mulch. Some plants currently within the zone are native plants that will be replanted elsewhere at the preserve. Volunteers and staff will also remove invasive grasses and other non-native shrubbery from the next zones away from the structure. The climate metrics and units of measurements that we will collect include: area improved (acres of clearance), invasive plants removed (cubic yards of vegetation removed), and native plants replanted (number of plants). This project will help reduce the fuel load at Anstine while aiding with long-term goals to increase the diversity of native plants of the front garden area. Anstine functions as an important green space in the Vista community, and keeping the preserve fire-safe will protect the natural resources and educational opportunities contained there, along with our neighbors.
