LA Compost Project
"Our Climate Action Project, Community Compost Day LA, will gather approximately 150 Angelenos at LA Compost’s Community Compost Hub in Griffith Park. The goal of the project is to provide hands-on education, resources, and community engagement that will galvanize residents to take climate action by greening their neighborhoods and reducing organic waste. Composting is a critical climate solution that diverts food scraps and organic material from landfills, where they would otherwise generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, this project helps improve soil health, support urban greening, and promote carbon sequestration in soils. Community Compost Day LA will feature activities including compost sifting, soil building, and hands-on demonstrations of composting techniques. Volunteers will help process finished compost, prepare materials for distribution, and support educational stations where participants can learn about food waste reduction, composting practices, and sustainable gardening. Participants will also receive free gardening resources—including compost, mulch, trees, seeds, and seedlings—to help them implement compost application and other climate-friendly practices in their communities. Community Compost Day LA will engage approximately 150 residents in climate action while strengthening community knowledge around composting, soil stewardship, and sustainable urban ecosystems. The project will directly divert organic waste from landfill, distribute locally produced compost, and equip participants with the knowledge and tools to continue climate-positive practices in their homes and neighborhoods.
