The San Diego River Park Foundation Native Planting Project
"We will be organizing a day of volunteers planting native plants at Grant Park along the San Diego River. We will be planting 125 or more plants to expand a community climate garden which will be enjoyed by youth participating in our Cool River education program as well as community members and other visitors.
Planting 125 native plants will have a positive, localized climate impact by improving drought resilience, reducing water consumption, supporting local biodiversity, and aiding in carbon sequestration. By utilizing low water using native plants, a well-designed, mature garden can see a significant decrease in water usage (up to 83% less) and a reduction in green waste (up to 56% less).
It creates a wonderful opportunity share information about the value of utilizing native, local appropriate plants. As this location is within a highly urbanized area, many people will have the opportunity to enjoy the garden. We are calling it a ""Climate Garden"" to feature messages out taking climate action.
Volunteers will work with our organization staff to design and plan the garden. Then our Mission Valley Garden Club leaders will organize the day of events and conduct any pre-event garden preparation, including taking photos. The plants will be purchased from a local native plant supplier.
On the day of the event, after a demonstration of proper planting techniques, volunteers will plant the plants and water them. After watering, the area will be mulch to reduce evaporative loss, with care to not have any mulch touching the plants.
Any food waste generated will be collected for onsite composting.
After the work is complete, everyone will gather to celebrate their accomplishment!
Organization staff will use social media to recruit community members to join the planting party. We will strive to be Zero Waste for the event. We will let people know about the next garden event, too!"
